Beacon technology is one of the fastest growing proximity services available, with estimates that over 60 million beacon units are expected to be installed by 2019. A beacon unit is a small wireless device that broadcasts a Bluetooth low energy signal to nearby smart devices. Once recognized by the smart device, the signal triggers actions and/or records analytics via mobile applications on device proximity. This technology elicits many of the same dangers as geolocation tracking, as well as dangers specific to the use of beacons. For instance, some companies are listening for these inaudible signals through a smart phone's microphone, allowing the company to potentially collect and record conversations without user consent.
